Personal statement

Alison Benbow has lived in Merton Park all her life, going to the same local schools that her parents did, and after leaving design college in 1979 worked for thirty years at London design agency Imagination as a draughtsman, graphic designer and modelmaker, specialising in model-making for the latter eleven years. Four years as a freelancer followed but since 2013 she has concentrated on being an artist, drawing on a combination of many of her old skills and several newly-acquired ones. And she still works on a drawing-board. Some things never change.

Artistic Statement

From an early age I’ve loved big green places with lakes and mountains. Landscapes, waterscapes and skyscapes that are uplifting and endlessly changing in colour; from childhood holidays in the Lake District to – in later life – the emptier, rugged and awe-inspiring Scottish Highlands. Paints and pencils have always been to hand, though, for those undeniably wet days… Although I don’t paint outdoors, I do take lots of photographs, for fun and as reference. Even so, I often create paintings from memory or from a sense of a memory, so my art is a mixture of the figurative and the abstract. I work mainly in watercolour but also experiment with adding other media such as ink, pastel or pencil and the occasional unexpectedness of the results can be inspiring. I’ve also learned the value of leaving work-in-progress lying around so that I keep seeing it – perhaps in a different light or even a different way up – which adds focus to my thoughts on how to finish a piece. This mulling can sometimes lead to a whole new take on the subject matter, which I find very exciting.
