Personal statement

Sharon Smart graduated from Camberwell College of Art in 1992, after which she worked for a National Museum followed by an arts television production and distribution company as a graphic designer. In 2003, along with her husband, she took ownership of A. C. Cooper, a leading fine art photography studio that has been in operation for over 100 years. She is a published artist and has been commissioned by organisations such as the Landmark Trust, as well as by many individuals, to create drawings and paintings of private houses, gardens, favourite views and portraits of both people and animals.

Artistic Statement

My current series of paintings focuses on the natural world growing within the urban environment close to where I live. I have undertaken a year long project to make a series of small scale studies, exploring pattern, shape, colour and texture found in nature and how they morph and develop as the seasons change. The process generally starts in a sketchbook as a carefully observed en plein-air painting sketch before before being developed from memory back in my studio in layers of gouache, ink, pastel, chalk and acrylic.
