Personal statement

Philip Copestake lived in Merton for over 25 years, with a studio at Lombard Road, South Wimbledon. Self taught as an artist, over the years he has had input and insight from a wide range of artists and teachers through attending courses and classes at or with: The Art Academy, Wimbledon College of Art, The Slade, Heatherley’s School of Fine Art, Central Saint Martins, St Ives School of Painting, Edinburgh Printmakers, Leicester Print Workshop, CityLit, SCOLA, London Drawing, Wimbledon Life Drawing, and Fielders of Wimbledon. Philip also has a background (and long career) in science (biology), and is a qualified yoga teacher, a mix that satisfies an eclectic and passionate interest in the human condition, and our place in the world. He has recently moved to South Yorkshire.

Artistic Statement

I work in a number of media, including print, drawing, and painting, and am interested in a diverse range of subjects – figurative, abstract, and botanical images all featuring strongly. I am constantly fascinated by the creative process, and in particular the notion of ‘mark-making’; how visual marks, both intuitively and precisely placed, are interpreted and can frequently initiate a deeply emotional response.
